Electrical Safety Test
Monitoring of safety and quality in the functioning of medical devices ensures the best possible level of security to be provided by a hospital to its patients and staff. This also covers both the hospital and its medical and paramedical personnel from legal implications arising from the use of medical devices.
Electrical safety testing is of major importance for all medical devices and particularly those which are located in critical areas of the hospital (e.g. operating rooms, ICU etc.) and those that are used for diagnostic purposes and carry energy to the patient or record vital signs (e.g. diagnostic ECG, monitors). Testing in accordance with international standards IEC 601-1 «Medical electrical equipment - Part 1: General requirements for safety» and ensuring that medical equipment works within the safety limits set by these standards is necessary to be performed periodically.
Furthermore, periodical testing of critical equipment such as diathermy, defibrillators and monitors should be part of a Clinical Engineering Department (CED) safety program. These inspections should follow the relevant international standards of the IEC 601-2* and ensure that critical parameters such as output power, leakage currents, etc. are within the limits and therefore the operation of the equipment is safe.
Systematic monitoring of safe operation of medical devices is now inherent in both CED best practice and the EU directives.
