Insulin pump therapy for type 1 diabetes

The Alberta Health and Wellness’ Executive Committee accepted the Alberta Health Technology Decision Program’s Advisory Committee’s recommendation to undertake a STE analysis of insulin delivery systems. The purpose of this report is to address the following questions of interest: What is the potential role of insulin pump therapy (IPT) in the intensive treatment of Albertans with type 1 diabetes […]

Computed Tomography and Its Carcinogenic Effects in Children and Youth in Québec

Developments in diagnostic radiology have made it possible not only to perform increasingly precise scans and but also to reduce their associated radiation doses. Yet the growing use of these scans in medical practice and the advent of new technologies expose the population to an increasingly high collective dose. Computed tomography (CT) has been estimated to […]

Core medical equipment

This document provides a list of core medical equipment fact sheets which have been issued by the ECRI Institute and the GMDN Agency, with a view to raising stakeholders’ awareness about their existence and their functionality. These technologies are commonly considered as important or necessary for specific preventive, diagnostic, treatment or rehabilitation procedures carried out in […]

Opportunities to Promote Efficiency in Hospital Decision-Making through the Use of Health Technology Assessment

KEY MESSAGES Health technology assessment (HTA) is a multidisciplinary area of applied research that produces high quality information about health technologies—drugs, medical technologies and health interventions. The HTA produces recommendations on whether a health technology should be considered, funded and adopted into practice. The goal is to use the research and recommendations from the HTA to […]

Integrating patients’ views into health technology assessment: Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) as a method to elicit patient preferences

Abstract BACKGROUND: Patient involvement is widely acknowledged to be a valuable component in health technology assessment (HTA) and healthcare decision making. However, quantitative approaches to ascertain patients’ preferences for treatment endpoints are not yet established. The objective of this study is to introduce the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) as a preference elicitation method in HTA. Based […]

Integrating local data into hospital-based healthcare technology assessment: Two case studies

Health technology assessment (HTA) programs influence practice on a broad scale through reimbursement decisions or national guidelines. Hospital-based HTA programs inform clinical decisions at the local level. Typically, they do this by adapting general HTA to their local setting, or by creating new HTA. However, unlike payer-based HTA organizations, hospital-based HTA organizations can also integrate local […]

Introducing new technology safely

Abstract Aim This report considers the introduction of new technology and the implications for patient safety. Methods and discussion A distinction is made between ‘conceptually’ new and ‘contextually’ new technology. The life cycle of technology from development to routine use is discussed and the key role for regulation, health technology assessment, clinical engineering and surveillance in […]

Comparative effectiveness of MRI in breast cancer (COMICE) trial: a randomised controlled trial

MRI might improve diagnosis of breast cancer, reducing rates of reoperation. We assessed the clinical efficacy of contrast-enhanced MRI in women with primary breast cancer. We undertook an open, parallel group trial in 45 UK centres, with 1623 women aged 18 years or older withbiopsy-proven primary breast cancer who were scheduled for wide local excision after triple assessment. […]

Invasive home mechanical ventilation, mainly focused on neuromuscular disorders

Invasive home mechanical ventilation is used for patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency. This elaborate and technology-dependent ventilation is carried out via an artificial airway (tracheal cannula) to the trachea. Exact numbers about the incidence of home mechanical ventilation are not available. Patients with neuromuscular diseases represent a large portion of it.

Practical tools and methods for health technology assessment in Europe: Structures, methodologies, and tools developed by the European network for Health Technology Assessment, EUnetHTA

This article presents an overview of the practical methods and tools to support transnational Health Technology Assessment (HTA) that were developed and pilot tested by the European network for HTA (EUnetHTA), which involved a total of sixty-four Partner organizations. The methods differ according to scope and purpose of each of the tools developed. They included, for […]
