Health Technology Assessment of Medical Devices

HTA is multi-disciplinary field of policy analysis that examines the medical, economic, social and ethical implications of the incremental value, diffusion and use of a health technology in health care.

The term Health Technology refers to application of organised knowledge and skills in the form of devices, medicines, vaccines, procedures and systems developed to solve a health problem and improve quality of life.

Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement Versus Fusion for Cervical Degenerative Disc Disease: A Health Technology Assessment

Cervical degenerative disc disease occurs in the cervical spine (the part of the spine in the neck) when the discs between the vertebrae (the bones of the spine) start to deteriorate. It causes painful and disabling symptoms that impact people’s quality of life and ability to function. When treatments such as medication and physical therapy are insufficient, surgery […]

Magnetic Resonance-Guided Focused Ultrasound Neurosurgery for Essential Tremor: A Health Technology Assessment

Essential tremor is the most common movement disorder and most often affects the dominant hand and arm. As the tremor gets worse, it can negatively impact quality of life. Medication is the first treatment, but it does not work for many people. The next treatment option is neurosurgery (brain surgery). Presently in Ontario, the neurosurgery options […]

Mitral Valve Clip for Treatment of Mitral Regurgitation: An Evidence-Based Analysis

Many of the 500,000 North American patients with chronic mitral regurgitation may be poor candidates for mitral valve surgery. The objective of this study was to investigate the comparative effectiveness, harms, and cost-effectiveness of percutaneous mitral valve repair using mitral valve clips in candidates at prohibitive risk for surgery. Primary studies were sought from existing systematic reviews that […]

Anaesthesia information management systems for patients undergoing surgery: clinical effectiveness and guidelines

Research Questions: What is the clinical effectiveness of using Anesthesia Information Management Systems (AIMS) for adult patients undergoing surgery? What are the evidence-based guidelines regarding the use of AIMS for adult patients undergoing surgery? Key Findings: Two non-randomized studies were identified, regarding the clinical effectiveness of using Anesthesia Information Management Systems (AIMS) for adult patients undergoing […]

Health technology assessment in surgery

This review focuses on how surgical methods should be assessed from a health technology perspective. The use of randomized controlled trials, population based registries, systematic literature research and the recently published IDEAL method are briefly discussed.

Total Knee Replacement: An Evidence-Based Analysis

The aim of this review was to assess the effectiveness, in terms of pain reduction and functional improvement, and costing of total knee replacement (TKR) for people with osteoarthritis for whom less invasive treatments (such as physiotherapy, analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, intra-articular steroids, hyaluronic acids, and arthroscopic surgery) have failed.

Computer-Assisted Surgery Using Telemanipulators: An Evidence-Based Analysis

The objective of this health technology policy assessment was to determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of computer-assisted surgery with telemanipulators. The technology for computer-assisted surgery with telemanipulators is a robotic arm that carries an endoscope while two other manipulator arms carry interchangeable tools, such as scissors and grippers. In a master-slave telemanipulator system, the master may consist of a […]

Health technology assessment in surgery

The term health technology is intended to include all methods used by health-care professionals to promote health, to prevent and treat disease, and to improve rehabilitation and long-term care. The broad definition of a health technology means that a wide range of health-care measures can be considered to be surgical technologies. Health-technology assessment in surgery therefore includes comparisons of surgery with no surgery or […]

Ultrasonic energy devices for surgery

Ultrasonic energy devices for surgery were developed in the early 1990s and are now available for both open and endoscopic surgical procedures. The operating principles of the ultrasonic energy devices for surgery are mainly related to the high-frequency vibration of the dissector’s blade: once in contact with the tissue, it causes tissue dissection by cavitation and haemostasis by denaturation of […]
