HTA of MDs
Health Technology Assessment of Medical Devices

HTA is multi-disciplinary field of policy analysis that examines the medical, economic, social and ethical implications of the incremental value, diffusion and use of a health technology in health care.

The term Health Technology refers to application of organised knowledge and skills in the form of devices, medicines, vaccines, procedures and systems developed to solve a health problem and improve quality of life.

Assessment on Implantable Defibrillators and the Evidence for Primary Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death

Implantable cardioverter–defibrillators (ICDs) are battery-powered implantable devices that monitor heart rhythm and deliver therapy in the form of either electric shock or antitachycardia pacing (ATP) when a life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia is detected. ICDs have been used in patients who survived sustained ventricular arrhythmias to prevent sudden cardiac death (SCD). In recent years, ICDs have also been […]

Implantable devices for closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in adults

Percutaneous closure of patent foreman ovale (PFO) is one of the treatment options for patients with PFO suffering from transient ischemic attacks (TIA), cryptogenic stroke or persistent migraine. At time of writing, none of the several CE marked PFO closure devices have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Currently there are 12 different PFO closure devices […]

A Health Technology Assessment Report on Mandibular Two-Implant Overdentures

The primary objectives of this Health Technology Assessment (HTA) were to assess clinical outcomes (clinician- and patient-based) of ball-type mandibular two-implant overdenture treatment in comparison to treatment with: 1) removable mandibular complete dentures, 2) different types of attachments for mandibular two-implant overdenture, and 3) different loading protocols of the mandibular overdenture. The secondary objective was to conduct a cost analysis […]

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation: Evaluation of the evidence and synthesis of organizational issues

Aortic valvular stenosis, or narrowing of the valve orifice, is a progressive disease that generally affects patients over the age of 65 years in Western countries and is usually caused by degenerative calcification. Aortic stenosis causes increasing resistance against the ejection of blood from the left ventricle towards the aorta. After symptoms appear (dyspnea, angina, syncope), […]

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) for Treatment of Aortic Valve Stenosis: An Evidence-Based Analysis

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has become an alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement (sAVR) for patients at high risk for surgery.  The objective of this analysis is to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for treatment of aortic valve stenosis (AVS) in symptomatic older adults.  AVS can result from the progressive build-up […]

Internet-Based Device-Assisted Remote Monitoring of Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices: An Evidence-Based Analysis

The objective of this Medical Advisory Secretariat (MAS) report was to conduct a systematic review of the available published evidence on the safety, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of Internet-based device-assisted remote monitoring systems (RMSs) for therapeutic cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) such as pacemakers (PMs), implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices. The MAS evidence-based review was performed to […]

Effectiveness of Cochlear Implants in Adults with Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss is the third leading cause of disability during the adult years, according to the World Health Organization. This type of hearing loss is usually permanent, most commonly occurs gradually, and becomes worse with increasing age with clinical manifestations typically appertains during the fifth and sixth decades. Cochlear implants replace the function hair cells […]

Stenting for Peripheral Artery Disease of the Lower Extremities

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a progressive disease occurring as a result of plaque accumulation (atherosclerosis) in the arterial system that carries blood to the extremities (arms and legs) as well as vital organs. The vessels that are most affected by PAD are the arteries of the lower extremities, the aorta, the visceral arterial branches, the […]

Intrastromal Corneal Ring Implants for Corneal Thinning Disorders

The purpose of this project was to determine the role of corneal implants in the management of corneal thinning disease conditions. An evidence-based review was conducted to determine the safety, effectiveness and durability of corneal implants for the management of corneal thinning disorders. The evolving directions of research in this area were also reviewed.  The primary […]

Interspinous implants and pedicle screws for dynamic stabilization of lumbar spine: Rapid assessment

This rapid assessment concerns the clinical effectiveness and the efficiency of innovative surgical technologies proposed for the treatment of degenerative spinal conditions: interspinous spacers and pedicle screw systems. These techniques are presented as an alternative to decompression surgery (laminectomy or discectomy) and/or fusion surgery. Currently, none of these implants are officially reimbursed in Belgium. However, in practice, a specific reimbursement can […]
