WHO Publishes Report and Resources from the Fifth Global Forum on Medical Devices

The World Health Organization (WHO) has published the official report and presentation materials from the Fifth WHO Global Forum on Medical Devices, held from 2–5 June 2025 in Geneva through a virtual format.

The Forum brought together the international medical-device and health-technology community to exchange knowledge, experiences and good practices aimed at improving access to safe, effective, appropriate and affordable medical technologies. WHO reports that the Forum welcomed 1,795 participants from 130 Member States and 119 panelists, with a broad programme of main sessions and side events.

The programme addressed a wide range of topics of particular relevance to biomedical and clinical engineers, healthcare professionals, policy-makers and health-technology specialists. These included priority medical devices, medical-device policies and regulation, diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, nomenclature, Health Technology Assessment (HTA), Health Technology Management (HTM), innovative technologies for low-resource settings, sustainable supply, human resources, emergency preparedness and artificial intelligence in medical devices.

INBIT’s contribution to the Forum

INBIT was pleased to contribute to this important international event through the participation of its CEO, Dr Aris Dermitzakis, in Panel 10 – “Assessing Innovative Health Technologies for Low-Resource Settings.”

During the session, Dr Dermitzakis presented INBIT’s work on evidence-based Health Technology Assessment, highlighting a structured methodology for evaluating innovative technologies in low-resource settings. The approach considers multiple dimensions of technology assessment, including clinical benefit, safety, economic impact, organisational requirements, legal considerations, social and ethical aspects, and environmental impact.
The session underlined the importance of systematic and evidence-based evaluation in ensuring that innovative health technologies are not only clinically effective, but also appropriate, sustainable and realistically implementable within the healthcare settings in which they are intended to be used.

A valuable international resource

The WHO has made the Forum presentations publicly available, providing a valuable reference resource for professionals working across the medical-device lifecycle. The official Forum report brings together the main discussions, outcomes and experiences shared during the event. Meeting recordings are also available from WHO upon request.
The material offers an opportunity for biomedical and clinical engineering professionals to explore current WHO priorities, international practices and emerging developments in medical devices and health technology.
